Creative Writing: Writing Short Stories

This five week series of workshops will explore writing short stories. Each session will concentrate on one specific aspect of creating short story narratives and at the conclusion of each session students will have created enough material to be in a position to write the first draft of a story. We will explore: Narrative shapes: causative situations, rising action, climax and denouement versus alternative strategies. Plot construction: how to build convincing narratives. Characterisation: how to develop psychologies for your evolving characters. Exposition of themes. Creative Writing: Freefall: Writing Contemporary Poetry

This five week series of workshops continues Stephen Smith’s popular courses on writing contemporary poetry. These workshops will concentrate on the subject of free-verse and will explore a variety of techniques associated with the genre over the last one hundred years. Each workshop will focus on an important element of free-verse technique and will enable each student to produce the first draft of a poem, which utilises that technique. By the end of the course, each student will have written at least three poems, which they will be encouraged to share with each other in a final session that will explore how to edit and to read.

Literature: Exploring Form in Poetry

Over the 10-week period, you’ll pay close attention to 10 different poetic forms such as, including the nocturne, haibun, prose poem, villanelle, golden shovel, pantoum, epistle, elegy, acrostic, couplet, ekphrastic, through close readings of selected verses, you’ll explore formal context and development in relation to your own work. You’ll also participate in lively discussions regarding formal aspects and question the use of techniques and experimentation. Prompts will be provided to support you with drafting your formal piece and you’ll be encouraged to continue your work at home in between sessions.
