With an awareness of Mental Health week, this one-off session revisits Sofia Coppola’s 2003 film Lost in Translation. A film initially praised by critics yet one which divided audiences. In more recent the years the film has attracted some renewed prise for drawing attention to issues such as feelings of isolation and loneliness, some may also argue the film presents several cases toward the need for calm in a chaotic modern world. Exploring five arguably lesser known classics produced by British film studios Ealing and would be ‘rivals’ Gainsborough, both stalwarts of 1940s and early 1950s cinema. Ealing Studios are still renown for their many now classic comedies produced throughout the 1940s and into the 50s but perhaps the repeated focus on the same films has lead to other equally remarkable classics from their own studio becoming overshadowed. Likewise, a repeated focus on Ealing Studios has perhaps stolen praise from other British studio of the era Gainsborough. This course aims to reinvestigate some of these ‘forgotten’ classics.

Since the very earliest days of cinema, filmmakers have pushed technological developments in the industry through their desire to put the impossible on screen, giving audiences the opportunity to marvel at seemingly death-defying feats and depictions of sheer otherworldly imagination. Over five weeks we’ll pull back the curtain to make an in-depth study of over a century of special effects creativity in cinema, from the earliest simple trick shots to cutting-edge computer-generated images, from miniature cities, giant apes, animated antics, spaceships, and skeletons to digitally de-aged actors.
