Course overview

Practice techniques for creating short stories, true or untrue. We'll apply the principles of short fiction to our writing, with the focus this term on thinking about how point-of-view impacts on structure. There will be writing exercises, discussions, an optional weekly homework task and feedback. Guidance on feedback techniques will be provided. The course content has flexibility, and will be adapted to suit the needs of the group. Suitable for improvers. This course uses the same content as the Friday morning course, Sense of Place: Showing & Telling, and the Thursday morning fortnightly course, Sense of Place: Showing & Telling.

Course description

This course is for adults, and is suited to those with some experience of creative writing – prose, poetry, family history or memoir. Regular optional homework tasks will help us to establish an effective writing routine, and promote the building of a portfolio of writing. The tutor will share aspects of theory, and set writing tasks that are intended to help inspire rough drafts for developing in your own time. The focus will be on prose forms, particularly short story and flash fiction, but experiments with style are encouraged. The emphasis is on enjoyment, and finding your own style in a friendly and positive group environment. Each session will include at least one link to a current submission opportunity for short prose, and the group will be encouraged to share advice and concerns about submitting work.

The group are encouraged to share their (optional) homework task writing on Canvas, and to take an active part in giving and receiving feedback, as they become comfortable with the principles. We work on the basis of constructive feedback which takes into account the confidence of the writer and builds on each individual voice.
